In short
Use SEG tension fabric for large, seamless, reusable graphics and for anything backlit: the fabric slots into an aluminium frame, packs small and has no glare. Use vinyl on rigid board for small, precise graphics, floors, curved laminates or anything fixed for one show. Many stands use both: fabric for the big brand wall, and vinyl for the details on counters and doors.
Key points
- SEG is a silicone-edged fabric pushed into a frame groove.
- Fabric is matt, light and foldable. Vinyl is sharp and rigid.
- Backlighting calls for fabric made to transmit light evenly.
- Ask for a fire certificate for whichever you print.
Side by side
| SEG tension fabric | Vinyl on board | |
|---|---|---|
| Look | Soft, matt, no glare | Crisp, can be gloss or matt |
| Size | Very large, joined at set widths | Limited by panel size, with visible joints |
| Backlighting | Excellent with the right fabric | Only on translucent film or acrylic |
| Transport | Folds into a small bag | Rigid panels need protection |
| Reuse | Frames reused; print can be swapped | Usually one show |
| Repair | Replace the graphic | Patch or reprint |
| Good for | Back walls, light boxes, ceilings | Counters, doors, small signs, floors |
How SEG works
SEG stands for silicone edge graphic. A thin silicone strip is sewn around the printed fabric, then pushed into a groove in an aluminium frame, and the frame pulls it taut. A graphic can go in within minutes, once the frame is standing. The result has no visible fixings, which is why it looks more expensive than it is. See the glossary for related terms.

Artwork differences
- Fabric stretches slightly, so printers give their own templates and allowances.
- Dark, solid colours can show variations between dye batches, so print panels that sit together in one run.
- Avoid thin type crossing a fabric join.
- Light boxes need a tested LED layout, or you will see hot spots.
- Check image resolution with the graphics calculator.
Choosing for your stand
If you exhibit several times a year, fabric usually wins, because the same frame can take a new message for each show. For a single custom stand with painted walls, vinyl lettering and panels are simple and precise. Curved walls can use either: fabric on a formed frame or flexible vinyl over a bent surface.
Frequently asked questions
01What is SEG fabric?
A printed fabric with a silicone edge that pushes into a groove in an aluminium frame, giving a tight, seamless graphic with no visible fixings.
02Is SEG better than vinyl?
For large walls and backlighting, usually yes. For small, sharp graphics and rigid surfaces, vinyl is often better.
03Can SEG graphics be washed?
Many can, depending on the fabric and ink. Ask your printer, and store them rolled or loosely folded to reduce creases.
04Do fabric graphics crease?
They can in transit, but tension in the frame removes most folds. A steamer can deal with what remains.
Put it into practice

Guidance here reflects common practice. Venues, organisers and countries set their own rules: always check the exhibitor manual and work with a qualified stand builder and engineer for structures.
