Timber slat wall calculator.
A timber batten wall is a repeating pattern, so its quantities are simple arithmetic. Check the count and the spacing before the joiner orders the timber.

- Linear metres
- 153.9 m
- To order, with waste
- 169.3 m
- Stock lengths

- 35 mm

Stock lengths are simple division. Cutting plans depend on real lengths, so the joiner's order may differ.
In short
To count battens, divide the wall length plus one gap by the batten width plus the gap, and round down. A 4 m wall with 45 mm battens and 25 mm gaps takes 57 battens. At 2.7 m high that is 153.9 linear metres, or about 169 metres to order with 10% waste. The pattern leaves a small remainder to split between the two ends.
How the sum works
Battens = (wall length + gap) ÷ (batten width + gap), rounded down. Linear metres = battens × their length.
Stock lengths = linear metres with waste ÷ stock length, rounded up. If the wall height is close to the stock length, cuts rarely combine, so allow more.
Divide the leftover between the two ends, or adjust the gap slightly, so the pattern looks deliberate. Timber must meet the venue's fire rules, which may require treated or certified boards. See timber battens on stands.
How to use it
- Measure the wall. Use the finished width between returns or corners.
- Set the rhythm. Enter batten width and gap. Wider gaps use less timber but show more of the backing.
- Check the ends. Use the leftover figure to centre the pattern on the wall.

Questions
01How do you calculate how many battens a wall needs?
Add one gap to the wall length, divide by the batten width plus the gap, and round down. That accounts for having one fewer gap than battens.
02What spacing looks best on a slat wall?
There is no single answer. Gaps about half the batten width look dense and solid; equal gaps look lighter. Test a short sample with the real backing colour.
03What goes behind the battens?
A dark backing panel or felt is common, because it makes the gaps read as shadow. Light strips can sit in the gaps if the fire rules and the structure allow.
04Can Studio model a batten wall?
Yes. Studio's [AI stand designer](/ai-booth-designer) can compose timber batten walls and take-off quantities from the 3D model. Your joiner still sets the final timber order.
