Curved wall calculator.

A curve always runs longer than the straight line between its ends. Get the radius, the real length and the graphic area before the build is priced on the straight dimension.

In short

A curved wall's radius comes from its chord (the straight width) and its bulge (the depth of the curve): radius = chord² ÷ (8 × bulge) + bulge ÷ 2. A 6 m wide wall bulging 1 m has a 5 m radius and an arc length of about 6.44 m. At 3 m high that is about 19.3 m² of surface to build and print.

How the sum works

Radius = chord² ÷ (8 × bulge) + bulge ÷ 2. This is the standard relationship between a chord and the height of its arc.

The arc's angle = 4 × arctan(2 × bulge ÷ chord), and arc length = radius × that angle in radians. Wall area = arc length × height.

If a curve is built from flat panels, each panel strays from the true curve by a small amount, shown in millimetres. That tells you whether a faceted wall will read as a curve. See how curved stand walls are built.

How to use it

  1. Measure the straight width. Take the distance between the two ends of the curve on the plan.
  2. Measure the bulge. Take the deepest point of the curve, square to that straight line.
  3. Take the arc to the workshop. Use the arc length and area for pricing structure, graphics and LED strip.

Questions

How do I find the radius of a curved wall?

Measure the chord and the bulge, then use radius = chord² ÷ (8 × bulge) + bulge ÷ 2. A 6 m chord with a 1 m bulge gives a 5 m radius.

Why does the arc length matter?

Graphics, LED strip and skirting follow the curve, so they are longer than the plan width. Pricing on the straight line under-orders all of them.

Can a curve be built from flat panels?

Yes, on a large radius. Panels meet at a slight angle, and if the stray is a few millimetres the eye reads a curve. Tighter curves need bent ply or formed frames.

Can Studio draw curved walls?

Yes. Studio's AI can compose curved stands, and curved wall lengths are measured along the curve in the [drawings and quantities](/booth-technical-drawings).
